It is hard to beat the wisdom of Yogi Berra. Two favorite quotes from Yogi can be applied to a student’s career search but, more importantly, can be applied to life after graduation and beyond.
“You’ve got to be careful if you don’t know where you’re going, because you might not get there!”
“If you don’t set goals, you can’t regret not reaching them”
Where are your students going? Are they putting the same preparation into their career after graduation as they have during their last few years of school? The answer in many cases is no! But that may not be all bad. Maybe they haven’t given it much thought in which case it is better to take a step back and look at options rather than picking one and hoping for the best. If they don’t know where they are going, stop, take a breath, and organize your thoughts.
If you go to MapQuest and ask for directions what is the first thing they ask? Where are you starting from? Well, that means first your students must figure out where they are. The following GFV Campus to Career Roadmap to Success process will help them decide where they are and help guide them when making career decisions. The process is simple, easy to follow, and, most importantly, can be used repeatedly at any stage of your student’s career.
The Process to Preparing an Individual Roadmap to Success
Know yourself
Why do values matter
What skills do you have
What is your personality type
What work environment is the best fit
Where do you want to live
Work/Life balance and your career
What is your ideal job
What do your students expect of themselves? What are their goals and timeframe for meeting them? If they are a Junior or Senior, there needs to be some urgency to putting these next steps together.
Develop a career plan
Execute
This might seem like an overwhelming task but, as in sports, the preparation is usually harder than the game. Without it they most likely won’t even get on the field in their job search.
The key to success is learning as much about the individual as possible. Ultimately, the goal is to get a job, have a career they will enjoy, meet new and interesting people with similar interests and values, and have the best chances for success.
This does not mean every career decision made will be perfect. However, if the time and effort are put in, and the process is followed, they significantly reduce their risk of failure.
Finally, there is one attribute that is highly sought after in business.
Resilience
It is not whether you fail, but rather how many times you get up after you fail!
